Sleep Medicine Committee

Mission

In order to improve the care for patients with sleep disorders the development of clinical sleep medicine (CSM) is paramount. CSM is a key component of the ESRS as it embeds clinical science into the broad framework of basic and clinical research, and also links in with the educational objectives of the society.

The mission of the Sleep Medicine Committee (SMC) is to promote CSM as an integrated multidisciplinary field and as a healthcare discipline in its own right, accessible for healthcare providers from different professional backgrounds. The SMC creates added value for clinicians in several areas of interest, including credentialing, accreditation, creating didactic content, establishing a platform for guidelines, practice parameters and position papers. Paediatric sleep medicine is a special focus of interest.

To this end, the SMC establishes a set of clearly defined goals that are to be achieved through cooperation with other ESRS committees, and with other societies that have affinity with sleep science. The interaction with the Assembly of National Sleep Societies is pivotal for receiving feedback from the different European countries and for identifying priorities regarding new developments.

The work of the SMC is conducted by subcommittees, led by project managers. Progress of the work is reported at the regular meetings of the committee.
