Basic Sleep Research Committee

Basic Sleep Research Committee

Mission

The Basic Sleep Research Committee (BSRC) aims to promote research which will provide fundamental insights into sleep physiology, mechanisms, evolution and functions.

The key goals of the BSRC are:

  • Establishing methodological standards, promoting networking, and supporting cooperation on basic sleep research within the ESRS
  • Ensuring strong representation of diverse basic research topics at the Sleep Europe meetings and other ESRS events
  • Facilitating collaboration between the ESRS and other societies in sleep-related research areas such as chronobiology and neuroscience

The BSRC supports the ESRS board, administration, and other committees in the following activities:

  • Identifying research communities in fields related to or relevant to basic sleep research, which are not yet engaged in the ESRS (ESRS administration)
  • Assisting in selecting basic research topics for ESRS events, travel grants, and awards (Scientific Committee)
  • Attracting students and early career researchers to the ESRS (Early Career Network)
  • Creating training opportunities and facilitating methods exchange (Education Committee)
  • Communicating the importance of fundamental sleep research, including animal research, to other sleep researchers and the public (Digital and Communications Committee)
  • Contributing to other ESRS activities, such as the website, textbooks, and the Journal of Sleep Research (ESRS board)

The BSRC will facilitate exchange between scientists investigating sleep in humans and animals, both under laboratory conditions and in their ecological environment using different experimental approaches and mathematical modeling, beyond individual labs and national borders. In the long-term, the BSRC aims to ensure a strong foundation for collaborative and interdisciplinary sleep research, generating invaluable knowledge and informing translational and clinical research.

The BSRC consists of nine members which are elected by the ESRS members for a two-year term. The ESRS board and membership should encourage the candidacy and election of researchers with diverse backgrounds and ensure representation across the full spectrum of research from in silico modeling to human studies.

Committee members may be re-elected to ensure continuity of the committee work but should serve no more than two terms. They are expected to attend committee meetings regularly and actively engage in the committee work. The BSRC members will designate representatives among themselves for collaboration with other ESRS committees and elect a chair at the first meeting after each election or after a position becomes vacant. The committee may elect associate members who are not entitled to vote but can help with specific committee tasks. The chair of the ESRS regularly reports to the ESRS board.
