Laboratory Description:

The Department of Sleep Medicine in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh has been diagnosing and treating sleep disorders in adults for almost 30 years. The Unit sees about 2, 500 new patients a year and has a seven-bed facility for performing polysomnography. It also uses home diagnostics with limited sleep studies as first line investigation in possible sleep apnoea. There is a strong focus for research and teaching in the Unit with over 250 original publications, many of which have formed the basis of best practice guidelines in the investigation and treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea on an international level. Our research is currently extending into neurological sleep disorders, including narcolepsy and parasomnias.
