Ever since, he learned and worked in the Clinical Sleep Laboratory at the University Hospital Zurich, in the Animal Sleep Laboratory at the University of Zurich (Prof. Irene Tobler), in the Animal Sleep Research Facility of Prof. Mehdi Tafti (University of Geneva), and in the group of Prof. Thomas Scammell (Boston).

He is a neurologist performing clinical, human basic and animal sleep-wake research, and his group works in a bidirectional translational setup. The key interests of the group concern the relationship between sleep and brain disease, the hypersomnias, and the development of novel technologies for sleep diagnosis and treatment. He led a large interdisciplinary research project at the University of Zurich, together with Prof. Hans-Peter Landolt, and is currently co-director of a Hochschulmedizin Flagship Project (SleepLoop) of the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, together with Prof. Reto Huber and Prof. Walter Karlen.
