Dr. Steffen Gais is a professor at the Institute of Medical Psychology, University of Tübingen, Germany. He has been working in sleep research since he was student assistant in the laboratory of Prof. Becker-Carus during his studies of psychology at the University of Münster. He started his career as doctoral student in the lab of Prof. Jan Born in Lübeck and as a postdoc with Profs. Pierre Maquet and Philippe Peighneux in Liège before starting his own Emmy-Noether research group at LMU Munich. His main research interest concerns the link between sleep and cognition, especially memory, and he uses human neuroimaging methods like EEG, MEG, and MRI to study these topics. Of particular interest to him are sleep spindles and the involvement of the parietal cortex in systems memory consolidation.
