Tom de Boer obtained a master’s degree in Chronobiology in 1992 and a doctorate in Mathematics and Natural Sciences in 1996 at the University of Groningen. He worked in sleep and chronobiology laboratories in Zurich (Switzerland), Philadelphia, PA (USA), and Leiden (The Netherlands) and published over 100 peer reviewed papers, reviews, and book chapters on sleep and sleep research.

He is a neuroscientist investigating the interaction between sleep and circadian or circannual rhythms. He is specialized in sleep-wake electroencephalogram-electromyogram recordings in freely moving rodents. This technique is combined with brain/body temperature recordings, and/or electrophysiological recordings.Since 2013 he is an Associate Professor at the Leiden University Medical Center in Leiden (the Netherlands). Dr. de Boer is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Sleep Research.
