President's Message December 2023

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

One key facet of the ESRS’s mission is to ‘facilitate the dissemination of information regarding sleep research and sleep medicine’, and 2023 has been a monumental year in the fulfilment of this.

This year was marked by numerous educational events including our 4th Sleep Science School in France, eSleep Europe and 3 webinars, with another planned for this month (details below). Thousands of researchers, clinicians, students and industry members from across the globe came together at these events to contribute to or learn more about the constantly expanding body of knowledge on sleep.

In my eyes, this solidifies the importance of the ESRS and its members as the voice of sleep in Europe and beyond. As I enter the final year of my final term as President, it is my aim to continue to grow the society especially through establishing or tightening relationships with other societies, promoting sleep through educational events and making sleep science more accessible via online channels.

On that note, register today for our final webinar this year – The European Insomnia Guideline: An Update on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Insomnia 2023.  Chief Editor Prof. Dieter Riemann will moderate this event on 12 December at 16:00 CET alongside co-authors Prof. Drs. Tiina Paunio, Colin Espie and Chiara Baglioni.

Looking towards 2024, I hope you have already saved the date for our next in-person Sleep Europe meeting in Seville, Spain. We’ve received over 100 symposia submissions which are now being evaluated, and we will be opening the call for abstracts early next year, so stay tuned! Thank you to all the volunteer reviewers and members of the Scientific Committee who have diligently reviewed symposia proposals over the past weeks.

Before we all see each other in Spain, 2024 will also host the inaugural Paediatric Sleep School in Italy from 11-13 April 2024. I encourage you to share this with your colleagues and network, as the application period closes in a week on 8 December.

Finally, in line with our focus on continued learning, today marks the opening of applications for the Sleep Medicine Examination (to be held online and in-person during Sleep Europe 2024) and for several ESRS grants. I encourage all members to take a minute to review the grants offered by ESRS and share these with colleagues who may not be aware of them.

I look forward to your active participation in 2024 and wish you a peaceful holiday season and good sleep in the new year.

Kind Regards,

Pierre-Hervé Luppi
ESRS President
