President's Message June 2025

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As summer nears for most of Europe (and we are still experiencing winter in Iceland) ESRS has been very active this spring, and we have some exciting initiatives taking place in June and July.

Last month, we gathered in Poznań, Poland, for the annual ANSS Presidents’ Meeting. It was a pleasure to reconnect with many familiar faces and welcome new ones. Representatives from 20 national sleep societies joined us in person, with three more participating online. I was truly inspired by the quality of the presentations and the spirit of collaboration throughout. You are doing great work in your countries, keep it up and keep telling others about your milestones.

I would like to sincerely thank those of you who took the time to contribute to our recent member survey for strategic planning. We have received 229 responses, and your input is already playing an important role in ensuring that the ESRS Strategic Plan reflects the needs and aspirations of our community. We look forward to sharing more as this process concludes this summer.

This week, the ESRS participated in the final Sleep Revolution General Assembly at the Charité Campus in Berlin. I have been so happy to have ESRS as one of the partners in this Horizon 2020 project, which brings together 39 institutions across 18 countries and marries the ESADA  Network with the Sleep Revolution Network. As the Principal Investigator, I watched this collaboration develop over the literal years and the new network and its outputs hold particular significance to me. A direct link to the Sleep Revolution homepage can be found on the ESRS website under Research Networks.

Looking ahead, I invite you to join us for the dedicated Paediatric Track of eSleep Europe on 12 June, featuring two timely sessions: a joint “Year in Review” on paediatric sleep and sleep-disordered breathing with the European Respiratory Society (ERS), and a symposium on melatonin use in children with the International Paediatric Sleep Association (IPSA). Both topics reflect recent clinically relevant developments in the field, and I hope many of you will attend. Register here.

Later this month, on 20 June, we will mark the summer solstice with the Summer Edition of our Joint ESRS–SRS Webinar Series, turning our attention to the intersection of sleep and climate change. Dr. Danielle Wallace and Dr. Ellemarije Altena will discuss how environmental shifts are influencing sleep patterns and broader health outcomes. I invite you to join the discussion and bring your questions to this important session.

Finally, I would also like to highlight the Respiratory Track of eSleep Europe, taking place on 3 July. This track will bring together clinical and research perspectives to explore current and emerging topics in respiratory sleep medicine. Register here.

As we head into summer vacation season, we prepare to rejuvenate with an extra dose of vitamin D and one less email as there will be no ESRS newsletter in July but we will keep you updated with Sleep Science Friday,  the eSleep Europe full-day virtual congress, and an August newsletter at the beginning of the month.

Kind regards,

Erna Sif Arnardóttir
