Sleep Science Friday: 2022 Sleep Medicine Examination

The idea for the implementation of an examination in sleep medicine was an initiative which originated during Prof. Dr. Claudio Bassetti’s ESRS presidency in 2012. This first grandparenting examination saw a total of 50 examinees from 21 countries becoming certified expert somnologists.
It was also during this time that the ESRS started the work of putting together the Sleep Medicine Textbook in order to support the examination. The first ESRS Sleep Medicine Textbook was published during Prof. Dr. Philippe Peigneux’s presidency in 2014.
The examination is actually 2 different examinations, each aimed at a specific type of certification:
There is the examination of certification in Sleep Medicine for physicians, psychologists, sleep scientists and physician assistants, which will be administered for the 11th time, and the Examination of Certification in Sleep Medicine for Sleep Technologists, to be administered for the 9th time.
Sleep Medicine Examination at Sleep Europe 2022
The 2022 Examination in Sleep Medicine will be held at Sleep Europe 2022, the 26th Conference of the ESRS, in Athens Greece. The congress is slated to take place 26-30 September 2022. The examination usually takes place alongside an ESRS event, either the biennial ESRS Congress or the ERS-ESRS Sleep & Breathing conference in the alternate year.
Due to the current global pandemic situation we’re still grappling with, a physical congress did not take place in 2020, so the examination was administered online for the first time. Hence, we are hopeful that we can all once again meet in-person for the examination.
While the ESRS hopes to have all examinees in attendance at the Sleep Europe 2022 congress (not mandatory), we recognize that we are living in exceptional times, where we need to remain flexible. As a result, the decision was taken to administer the examination in a hybrid manner, using both a physical and online format to be held on separate days: on-site on Friday, 30 September and online on Saturday, 1 October.
Also, in order to support eligible examinees with the examination fee, the ESRS Board has announced a programme of 6 grants of 250 EUR each. Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2022. Here are further details on the criteria and requirements for this grant.
Additionally, the grant awarded includes one copy of the ESRS Sleep Medicine Textbook and free shipping of the Textbook.
2021 Milestone Examination
The 2021 sitting of the examination in sleep medicine, held on 27 November 2021 was a milestone event for the ESRS: it marked us passing the 1000 certification threshold: 821 certified somnologists from 56 countries and 225 certified sleep technologists from 21 countries.

Application Guidelines
The ESRS Sleep Medicine Examinations Office is currently accepting applications until 31 January, 2022. With just a little over 2 weeks before the deadline, we urge you to submit your completed applications as soon as possible.
