    The Society had another highly successful Congress in Basel during last September and I congratulate and thank all those involved in the organisation and delivery of an excellent scientific and social programme.

    We are now rapidly approaching the dates of our Congress in Basel and all indications are that this will be a highly successful meeting. The registration statistics indicate that we are on track to approximate the record attendance at our last Congress in Bologna and the Scientific Programme promises a highly rewarding and varied content.

    With a new record of 1’037 submitted abstracts and 1’903 participants from 64 countries the ESRS congress in Bologna in 2016 was very successful. Building on this great success, we are now looking forward to the 24th Congress of the European Sleep Research Society from 25-28 September 2018 in Basel, Switzerland.

    Preparations for the ESRS 2018 meeting in Basel, 25 – 28 September 2018 are going well and we look forward to an exciting meeting.
  • July 2017 
    ESRS and ERS welcomed over 830 delegates to this year’s Sleep and Breathing conference, which took place on 6–8 April in Marseille, France. This year’s event offered over 40 scientific sessions and educational workshops to clinicians, scientists and allied health professionals specialising in the respiratory sleep medicine field.
  • March 2017 
    Over 3 intense days, delegates will have the opportunity to choose among over 40sessions of the programme. Over 55 experts will discuss their latest findings and present key updates on all sleep disorders and sleep breathing disorders. 100abstracts were accepted for presentation providing interesting and new data from around the world in the sleep and respiratory medicine and research fields.

    On behalf of the outgoing Scientific Committee we are happy to provide a summary of the highly successful 23rd ESRS Congress held in Bologna, Italy in September. The congress was attended by 1903 participants from 64 countries.

    With already more than 1,500 registered participants from 60 different countries, this year’s congress promises a record in participant numbers (final numbers in 2010/2012/2014: 1560/1404/1568 participants).

Being an ESRS member makes you an actor in the biggest European sleep community, with substantial advantages including free access to the Journal of Sleep Research, preferential registration fees in meetings organised or co-organised by the ESRS, and travel grants for young researchers.

    The ESRS board and its committees have been very active over the last few months as documented by monthly teleconferences and several face-to-face meetings of the ESRS board, as well as ongoing interactions with the National Sleep Societies, the World Federation of Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine Societies (WFSRSMS), and the European Societies for Respiratory Medicine, Psychiatry, Neurology and Chronobiology.

    The joint ESRS-ERS teaching and scientific event was a great success with almost 1.000 attendees and about 100 abstracts. The novelty of the event and the quality of the topics/speakers has attracted many physicians and scientists. The fact that most of them are not ESRS members fulfilled one of the goals of the event.

    ESRS Meeting 2010 in Lisbon The meeting was a great success in terms of attendance and scientific/teaching contents. A record of 943 abstracts were received (843 in Glasgow 2008). The high attendance of Glasgow 2008 (1430 delegates) was exceeded with a total number of delegates of 1552 (the highest in the history of the society).

    Aims of the Research Networking Committee (RNC: coordinator, R. Amici; vicecoordinator, P. Lévy;  embers, P Lavie, P. Peigneux, T. Porkka-Heiskanen, D.J. Skene, M. von Schantz, J. Santamaria) are: i) to support sleep research and sleep teaching networks in Europe, by the definition/identification of sleep research laboratories and teaching centres in Europe as a first step; ii) to establish new criteria for the assignment of ESRS research and travel grants.
