Ten steps to apply for the ESRS Examination in Sleep Medicine

ESRS as summarised the exam application procedure in 10 steps to help you guide through the application submission process.

Can I do the online examination from everywhere? What equipment do I need?

It’s up to the examinee to sit the exam from their home or office. You only need to be alone, in a brightly lit room.

Technical equipment for the examination include a computer with camera, microphone, speakers (headphones are not allowed), and a mobile device with a camera. An application will also need to be installed on the mobile device.

Cheating will be prevented with an online live proctoring service using screen share, camera, microphone and an additional mobile device with a camera.

Is it required to be an individual ESRS member?

Yes. Individual (full/reduced) ESRS membership is a strict requirement for the acceptance of your application! Please note, that a membership in a National Sleep Society is not sufficient. If you are not an ESRS member, please visit the ESRS website and apply for membership.

Where can I find the application form?

You can find the link to the application form in the header menu link “Application” as well as on the Sleep Medicine Examination homepage. Please note, that the form will only be accessible during the application period to logged in ESRS members. Once the application period has finished, the form will no longer appear. Also, you should only submit the application form once, and if you need to make any changes, you have to do it on the “Application Preview/Update” page.

Where can I preview and edit my application?

You can preview and edit your submitted application by visiting the page “Application Preview/Update“. Once on the page, you can make changes to already uploaded information and/or add additional files by clicking on the link “Edit Entry”. Please note, that you can only update your application during the application period.

What is the online examination fee, and what does it include/exclude?

The total online examination costs 600 EUR.

  • Upon submitting your application, 90 EUR is to be paid. This is non-refundable, regardless of the outcome of your application.
  • 2 months before the examination, the remaining balance of 510 EUR is to be paid. Failure to finalise this payment removes your examination seat. This payment is also non-refundable, but you can shift your participation once to the next year’s sitting if you are no longer able to participate.

Inclusions:

  • Examination “seat” and proctoring
  • First shipment of the physical certificate if the examination is passed. You will receive a tracking number, but if it is returned to sender, lost or damaged, a 10 EUR fee is levied for the printing and/or shipment of a new one.

Exclusions

  • The recommended readings e.g. the ESRS Sleep Medicine Textbook, and any other study material, have to be ordered at your own cost, unless you were a Sleep Medicine Exam grant recipient.
  • The examination fee does not cover any conference fees. With your application you should have been an ESRS member, and be able to benefit from a reduced congress fee.

Can my employer / institution pay the examination fee on my behalf?

Yes, this is possible, but the potential examinee’s name and ESRS Member ID number needs to be indicated in the “Order Note” so that the payment can be correctly matched to the employer/institution.

Is the examination available in multiple languages?

Currently, no. The examination is only available in English.

How will the examination be monitored?

The online exam is monitored through a live proctoring service using screen share, camera, microphone and an additional mobile device with a camera. The ESRS Education Team also reviews each examination session to mitigate any cheating attempts.

What study material is required for the examination?

The ESRS Sleep Medicine Textbook 2nd Edition (2021) is the main recommended reading for this examination. All interpretations in the practical part and some questions in the theoretical part will be based on the 2023 AASM Scoring Manual Version 3
