Sleep Europe 2024 Lecture Summary

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) occurring exclusively or predominantly in REM sleep has been described many years ago, and epidemiological data suggest a major role of REM OSA in the pathogenesis of hypertension. However, many aspects of REM OSA are insufficiently defined, from the best definition of the disease, to its real prevalence in the population, given that a polysomnographic study is needed for diagnosis. The role of REM OSA in metabolic disturbances is also debated, as its real impact on overall prognosis. REM OSA might be much more frequent than currently believed, and recent publications reported its occurrence in several diseases. The aim of the presentation is to provide an updated and critical overview of REM OSA, and suggest areas for future research.
