Historical perspective of the society
The Bulgarian Somnology Society was established and registered in Plovdiv, Bulgaria in 2017. It is a direct successor of the Bulgarian Society of Sleep Medicine (founded in 2002; and officially registered in 2008).
First experimental and clinical sleep studies in Bulgaria were performed in early 1960s.
Main topics at present: Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) in CHF, Sleep in neurology; SDB and cardiovascular co-morbidity, Sleep at high altitude, EDS, Drowsy driving, Metabolic disturbances and OSA, RLS, Insomnia.
The aim of the society is to promote sleep medicine in Bulgaria by arousing society awareness, inciting governmental politics, educating medical stuff and creating standards related to the field of sleep medicine.
