Sleep Science School 2025

APPLICATION PERIOD: 1 MARCH - 24 APRIL 2025

All applicants will be informed of the status of their applications by early June.

After four successful ESRS Sleep Science Schools, the ESRS Board is dedicated to organising thematic schools focused on uniting early-career sleep scientists around important topics. These events provide avenues for gaining knowledge, sharing research, connecting with experienced researchers, and building networks of excellence.

The upcoming fifth edition will focus on “Advancements in Sleep Research: From Methodologies to Theories” and will again be held at the CNRS Villa Clythia site in Fréjus, South France. The event is scheduled for 21-26 September 2025. ESRS Past President Pierre-Hervé Luppi, Vice President Vladyslav Vyazovskiy, and Philippe Peigneux will lead this edition.

The programme will be highly interactive, aiming to maximize participant involvement. It will feature comprehensive lectures from international sleep experts covering diverse topics, including human and animal research. Participants will have the opportunity to present and discuss their own studies, and interactive workshops will focus on grant writing and proposal development. Throughout the week, faculty members will be available on-site, participating in group activities and offering theoretical and practical insights through discussions with early career researchers.

What past participants say about the ESRS Sleep Science School

"As a senior postdoc working on paradoxical sleep, I am looking for targeted events to tackle specific subjects rather than large conferences, during which I always get some “fear of missing out” feeling. I also search for collaborative atmospheres that encourage exchange between PhD students, junior and senior scientists, privilege the quality of exchange rather than the quantity. This 4th edition of the ESRS Sleep Science School was exactly about this. (...) Everyone yearns to find an answer. And through lectures, collaborative workshop activities or simple discussions at dinner, everyone gets to learn something new. Many thanks to ESRS, to the organising committee and all participants for making this week so special! "
"During ESRS Sleep Science School, I presented my work on brain clearance in narcolepsy—a study with no significant differences between patients and controls. While null results rarely steal the spotlight, my talk still won third prize in the competition! More importantly, a PhD student told me they felt encouraged to share their own null findings, despite their supervisor’s advised against it. Sharing non-significant results strengthens science, and I leave this “sleep camp” paradoxically awake—sleep-deprived but inspired by the discussions on REM sleep."
